XERISCAPE GARDENS PROJECTS IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY (2006-2010)
The SDSWCD was awarded a Community Based Organization Grant by Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resource Management to Teach the Public New Conservation Habits. One of the most successful components of this program was the design and installation of drought tolerant plantings in public areas throughout the county.
Many of the schools prepared the students with curricula specifically addressing water conservation through drought tolerant plantings, assemblies, and presentation of certificates to those who participated in the planting events. Although direct contact was made with only several thousand students, the ripple effect of the conservation message being delivered by youngsters to their families and friends is incalculable.
