Everglades Restoration Plan Education Program

This program educated 1,500 minority middle and high school students in South Miami-Dade County on the importance of the Everglades ecosystem, how and why the Everglades Restoration Plan Project is being accomplished, and how this project will affect the population, land areas and water supply in their immediate area.  Local project areas and transition zones will be identified that will provide more natural water flow to the Everglades and into Florida Bay.

Students were first given a pre-test on the Everglades and its relationship to South Miami-Dade County.  After distributing literature and booklets on the Everglades, the SDSWCD staff gave a one-hour classroom presentation, followed by a post-test on the information presented.  A 4-hour field trip to the Everglades National Park (E.N.P.) and the C-111 South Dade Project area (an area adjacent to the Park's main entrance that will eventually be restored to wetlands) was then conducted to observe some of the areas described in the literature.  This field trip was offered to the 500 students who demonstrate the most interest and rank highest on the post test.
